Kaizer Chiefs eye Bafana shot-stopper as Sekhukhune door opens

Kaizer Chiefs have identified Renaldo Leaner as a potential solution to their ongoing struggles in goal, as Sekhukhune United reportedly show willingness to entertain offers for their highly-rated goalkeeper.

The 27-year-old’s rise has not gone unnoticed at Naturena, with Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi said to be a firm admirer. Leaner’s standout form at the back end of the 2024/2025 season helped him surpass the performances of former teammates Badra Ali Sangare and Lloyd Kazapua, both released by Sekhukhune as the club reshaped its goalkeeping unit.

Goalkeeping shake-up opens the door

Babina Noko recently bolstered their goalkeeping department with two international signings. Zambia’s Toaster Nsabata and Equatorial Guinea’s Manuel Sapunga, who joined from Polokwane City FC. This influx of talent has created an opening for Leaner to seek a move. With Sekhukhune now open to offers for the in-form shot-stopper.

Despite growing interest, no official approach has landed on Sekhukhune’s desk yet. However, Chiefs’ growing urgency to strengthen their goalkeeping line-up may change that soon.

Leaner’s stats back up the hype

Leaner impressed fans and pundits alike with a string of solid performances. He conceded just nine goals in nine appearances across all competitions and kept two clean sheets. His heroics between the posts played a crucial role in Sekhukhune’s fourth-place finish in the Betway Premiership.

A defining moment came in March during the Nedbank Cup clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. Leaner delivered a Man-of-the-Match performance, pulling off nine crucial saves to frustrate the DStv Premiership champions.

His exploits earned national recognition, with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos selecting him for the squad to face Tanzania and Mozambique in June. Broos included Leaner alongside Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates and Ricardo Goss from SuperSport United. Which further highlights the keeper’s rising profile.

Chiefs’ goalkeeping crisis continues

At Naturena, Chiefs have struggled to establish a consistent presence in goal. Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma have rotated duties. While Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari has yet to settle since his move from TS Galaxy.

With Chiefs desperate to find a dependable first-choice keeper, Leaner fits the bill perfectly. His age, experience, and recent form make him a strong candidate to stabilise a position that has become a major concern for the Soweto giants.

Will Kaizer Chiefs make a bid for Leaner soon?
