Kaizer Chiefs expected to challenge for the PSL title

Makua believes Kaizer Chiefs can compete for the Betway Premiership this season, but he stresses that squad cohesion is key.

The former attacker feels the CAF Confederation Cup run nearly resulted in quarterfinal qualification for Amakhosi, which stands to enjoy continuity next season.

KAIZER CHIEFS IN THE BETWAY PREMIERSHIP RACE

“This season, they must fight to be in the CAF Champions League, that’s where they deserve to play,” Makua said on Soccer Laduma.

“They do have a chance, the league is still wide open, they can challenge for it. I believe we’ve got a team, it’s just the coaches sometimes with the line-up, it’s not up to scratch.”

Makua admitted that the team’s combinations might not be fully settled yet, but he believes Kaizer Chiefs have a good squad with quality players compared to last season.

“This season I feel we have a squad that can compete, not to say we’re putting pressure on them, to say, ‘You guys go out and win the league’, no, just go out there and play as a team and play constructive football.

“We do have those players, that they can go out there and fight for the team,” he concluded.

With 15 fixtures still to play, a total of 45 points remain up for grabs. For Amakhosi to stay in contention, they will likely have to turn their home ground into a fortress, find greater stability on the road, and ensure they do not stumble in decisive encounters against Pirates and Sundowns.

STELLENBOSCH FC AND ORLANDO PIRATES IN THE SOWETO DERBY

As the league battle intensifies, Kaizer Chiefs remain eight points behind Orlando Pirates in fourth place, but with two games in hand, the squad has a chance to close the gap when they face Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium on Tuesday, before the Soweto derby on Saturday.
