Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates starting XIs for the Derby?

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are gearing up for another Soweto Derby. Here’s how we think they’ll line up at FNB Stadium.

Likely Kaizer Chiefs XI in the Derby

Petersen; Monyane, Msimango, McCarthy, Cross; Maboe, Cele; Lilepo, Shabalala, Duba; Silva.

Likely Orlando Pirates XI

Chaine; Sebelebele, Seema, Sibisi, Hotto; Nemtajela, Makhaula; Appollis, Mofokeng, Moremi; Mbuthuma.

Chiefs find the foreign formula

Gone are the days when Caleb Bimenyimana and Christian Saile were fumbling around and missing good chances. Chiefs now have two foreign attackers who can be relied upon for a big impact in the final third. Increasingly impressive Congolese attacker Glody Lilepo looks the part up top. The 28-year-old, who was signed primarily as a right winger, has four goals and three assists in the league this term. It’s not the most prolific return, but with the support of a youthful attacking midfield trio, he’s a decent short-term option. Meanwhile, Portugal-born striker Flavio Silva now has seven goals in the league in just 17 appearances. That puts him in the ‘super sub’ category for sure. Lilepo and Silva are the club’s top scorers across all competitions, and both look poised to hit double figures.

Orlando Pirates miss key duo

The Sea Robbers are still top of the Betway Premiership table after Sundowns drew with Stellenbosch 1-1 on Wednesday night. The Brazilians still have a game in hand, so a win in the Soweto Derby for Pirates is paramount. They’ll have to do so without long-term absentees Sihle Nduli and Thapelo Xoki. Aside from that, Pirates have a full squad from which to choose.

Soweto Derby key details

Sunday, 26 April, is the day that Pirates host Chiefs in this season’s final Soweto Derby. Orlando Pirates will be back in second place if leaders Sundowns beat Stellenbosch on Wednesday. Either way, it’s must-win for the Sea Robbers. Kickoff from FNB Stadium is at 15:00. The match will be aired on DSTV channel 202.
