Kagiso residents feel let down by SAPS

Published

The community of Kagiso in the West Rand says it feels let down by the South African Police Service. Hundreds of angry residents took to the streets to root out illegal miners. They say zama zamas are committing crimes and police are doing nothing about it. So far one person has died during the unrest.

They’re calling for the immigration policy to be overhauled. They say illegal immigrants are occupying informal settlements in the area and are allegedly committing serious crimes.

“It’s about 13 to 15 zama zamas that the community themselves apprehended without the support of the police. That was our main worry, that when community goes in without police what’s gonna happen, luckily we have a very brave community,” a community leader said.

“To be quite frank, the police are failing us. They were notified about the meeting to come and manage the crowd, so that we don’t find any casualties. But are they here? No. Commissioner promised he’ll send his people, today nothing and his phone is off.”
