Jomo Sono comments on the new Pirates that’s chasing Sundowns

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono believes.

The former ball wizard says the Buccaneers are firing on all cylinders and could challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the Betway Premiership crown if they maintain consistency.

After a shaky start under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates have bounced back with five straight league wins and a fourth consecutive MTN8 title, scoring 16 goals and conceding just three in nine games across all competitions.

ORLANDO PIRATES CAN COMPETE WITH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Sono says it’s not just the results that impress him. The blend of experienced stars and hungry youngsters, eager to prove themselves, gives Pirates the balance and motivation needed to mount a serious title challenge this season.

“Pirates are in good form, but it will depend on their consistency, as form can fluctuate,” Sono told KickOff.com. “Given their current form, they have a chance to compete with Sundowns. They have signed some talented young players who are eager to make a name for themselves.

“Because they are not yet well-known in football, they will be motivated to prove themselves,” Sono added.

JOSE RIVEIRO’S EFFORTS

Former Pirates coach Jose Riveiro may not have delivered the elusive league title, but he etched his name into Buccaneers history with an impressive trophy list. In just three seasons, he won three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s most successful coaches.

Yet, the Betway Premiership remained out of reach. Each campaign saw Pirates finish runners-up behind Mamelodi Sundowns. In 2022/23, Sundowns finished with 70 points to Pirates’ 54. The following season it was 73 to 50, and last term 73 to 61.

Despite the shortfall in the league, Riveiro’s tenure showed Pirates could dominate knockout competitions and consistently challenge at the top of the table. His work laid a platform for coach Ouaddou to build on and continue the chase.
