John Maduka’s concern ahead of Kaizer Chiefs meeting

Royal AM head coach John Maduka has revealed his concern ahead of locking horns with Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on Sunday.

He was speaking to the journalists during the club’s Nedbank Cup media open day on Tuesday.

Maduka says he is worried about his side’s shaky defence considering how dangerous Chiefs are when attacking.

He believes at some points, they have conceded unnecessarily. However, he stated that Chiefs have the same problem, and his side would have to exploit that.

“If you look at our games, we’ve been conceding a lot of goals, which is not good,” he said.

“We can’t continue conceding goals. And the goals that we’re conceding, we’re not supposed to concede them.

“That’s why we need to prepare in that area. It’s a bit of concern for us that each and every game, especially the three or four games that we have played, we have conceded.

“I think we have to change that by working very hard. That’s why you can see we’re trying different combinations at the back so that we can see how it goes.

“It looked better against the Stellenbosch, although there are still some areas that we have to make sure that we’re solid.

“So it’s very important for us. For us to win the game against Kaizer Chiefs, we have to defend very, very well.

“But at the same time, that is their strength [attacking], they’ve got their weakness.

“And their weakness, it’s maybe when it comes to defending, we must be able to capitalise on their weakness.”

Thwihli Thwahla will welcome Amakhosi at Chatsworth Stadium for the second time this season.

The last time the Soweto giants visited AM in Durban, they lost 1-0 in what was the first match of the DStv Premiership 2022/23 season.

However, Chiefs avenged that defeat in the second round when they won 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in February.

The match will kick off at 6:00 pm.
