US President Joe Biden has officially withdrawn from the presidential race, making the announcement just a week after the failed assassination attempt on Republican candidate Donald Trump.
In his announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the campaign. However, the official Democratic nominee will be selected at the Democratic National Convention in August.
Biden, who has been self-isolating after a recent Covid-19 diagnosis, shared his decision through an online letter.
He said: “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year.”
The US presidential election is scheduled for November.
Biden called on Democrats to unite and “come together and beat Trump.”
