91-year-old jazz musician Abdullah Ibrahim has died after a short illness.

Born Adolph Johannes Brand on 9 October, 1934, in Cape Town, he performed under the stage name Dollar Brand in the early days of his career.

He began taking piano lessons at the age of seven and made his professional debut at fifteen.

He later changed his name to Abdullah Ibrahim when he converted to Islam in 1968.

Ibrahim left South Africa for Europe in the 1960s to escape apartheid, settling in Germany. He spent his later years composing, practicing, and occasionally performing while living in Germany.

One of Ibrahim’s best known songs was 1974 Mannenberg.

Among his honours are the Order of Ikhamanga, Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from Japan, an honorary doctorate from the University of the Witwatersrand, and the South African Music Lifetime Achievement Award.

According to his website, he was a martial arts Black Belt with a lifelong interest in zen philosophy.

He died in Germany after a short illness surrounded by his loved ones.
