AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu have revealed he is very close to appointing “a big fish” as the club’s new coach.
AmaZulu currently have no coach, no assistants, no team manager, no team scout and no general manager after Zungu wielded the axe and they were all sacked recently following a poor season this past term where they finished 12th on the DStv Premiership table.
It was Ayanda Dlamini who was in charge on the sidelines in the last six matches after the club had redeployed Romain Folz to Zungu’s advisor in April.
On top of these vacant roles, Zungu said they want to appoint a sporting director.
AmaZulu have been linked with coaches such as Luc Eymael, Pablo Franco Martin and Dutch coach Alfons Groenendijk.
However, speaking to the media during the memorial service of Clive Barker at Olive Convention Centre on Thursday, Zungu was reluctant to speak about the issues pertaining AmaZulu.
“Don’t talk about the coach now,” said Zungu without being asked after he spoke about Barker, who led Usuthu to the Coca-Cola Cup trophy in 1992, the last time they won a major trophy.
“We will get to that soon.”
However, Zungu has made it clear the coach will be appointed before the club’s pre-season starts, which might be later this month or on 1 July.
“Next week our players will know where they should go [for the pre-season], their health checks, take them through training drills, there shouldn’t be any concerns at all,” assured Zungu.
“We have thought very highly of them. No sooner than when they arrive they will know who is their coach going forward and I know they will be very excited, that we have thought very highly of them.
“We are very close [to get the coach] and everyone must be very excited. It is a big fish.”

There are rumours that AmaZulu made an attempt to hijack Nasreddine Nabi, who is understood to be in talks with Kaizer Chiefs after leaving Young Africa SC, but Zungu laughed those off: “you guys are such a trouble,” he said.
