Israeli – Gaza war: Dozens killed in Gaza School

Hamas media reported that more than 100 people were killed and a large number left injured after an Israeli strike on a Gaza school that was occupied by displaced people on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the BBC reported that Fadl Naeem, head of Al-Ahli Hospital where many of the injured were taken, said around 70 victims were identified after the strike.

The Hamas media office said Al- Taba’een school, which houses more than 1000 displaced people, was struck in the early hours of Saturday during dawn prayers.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF)  and the Israeli Security Agency confirmed in a statement that its air force had targeted a command-and-control centre where Hamas commanders and operatives were hiding.

IDF said it had taken steps to reduce the risk of harming civilians, “including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information”.

The Israeli-Gaza war has been ongoing since 7 October last year, after Israel launched an attack that claimed the lives of more than 1200 people and captured more than 250 hostages.

Since then, nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Negotiations to put an end to the violence are expected to begin on Thursday.
