‘Is that Jonasi?’: Sdumo Mtshali’s ‘lookalike’ sparks online frenzy [photo]

Instagram almost crashed when a Sdumo Mtshali “lookalike” sparked frenzy, leaving fans debating whether it was the actor himself or someone who simply looked like him.

SDUMO MTSHALI’S ‘LOOKALIKE’ SPARKS ONLINE FRENZY

This hilarious frenzy started when a prominent real estate agent, Mbali Molemane, posted what some believed to be a real family photo featuring her partner and their child.

The man’s face sparked a barrage of mixed reactions, with many saying he resembles Jonasi Gomora, Sdumo’s character in The Polygamist, while Mbali was likened to Joyce Gomora, his on-screen wife.

Mbali wrote this tongue-in-cheek caption: “Ba kwa Gomora [the Gomoras] just got another property! @sdumo.mtshali.”

Gonstee._ added: I had to zoom in just to ensure that it’s not Jonasi. Congratulations.

Isaachaze.za asked: Is that Jonasi?

Straphy wrote: Hai, I thought it was Jonasi.

In the September/October 2025 edition of BONA magazine, Sdumo wore a stylish denim jacket and jeans, paired with black boots.

Interestingly, the gentleman in Mbali’s post is wearing the same outfit, which has led some of her followers to conclude that this is definitely an AI-generated photo.

@hood_princess.co.za commented, “That’s not him, but I love the picture,” which drew a few sobering reactions.

Lesego1850 responded: It’s him (Sdumo)… she tagged him.

Itumeleng Shiburi added: It’s him. He’s got an exact outfit like that on his page.

BoogaShugga commented: VULA AMEHLO [open your eyes] they tagged him (Sdumo).

Thabiso Tenza tagged Sdumo and wrote “@sdumo.mtshali congratulations.”

Sdumo replied, “WTH [what the hell].”

SDUMO MTSHALI UNPACKS HIS CHARACTER, JONASI GOMORA

The award-winning actor has been trending for his outstanding portrayal of Jonasi Gomora in The Polygamist.

In an interview with TV Mzansi, Sdumo described his character as “layered” and said he was “searching” for something among the women he was with.

“He’s so layered. He’s searching for something. There’s something he’s searching for. I don’t think he’s a villain. He’s definitely lost.”
