- A major investigation is underway after 20 minors were found crossing the border with adults who were not their legal guardians.
- BMA and SANDF teams intercepted the group near the Limpopo River, uncovering a significant breach of child welfare and immigration laws.
- The children are currently being held in safe care while officials work to trace their families and identify those responsible for the illicit movement.
Authorities have launched a suspected child trafficking investigation following the interception of more than 20 minors near the Limpopo River.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) and the military discovered the children, aged five to 17, during patrols near the Beitbridge border fence on Thursday.
The operation raised immediate alarms when officials established that out of 10 accompanying adults, only one was a biological parent.
The remaining minors were travelling without legal guardians or parental supervision, suggesting a coordinated attempt at human smuggling or exploitation.
Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato confirmed the children are now under state care while police and social workers verify their identities.
Authorities have vowed a zero-tolerance approach to the unlawful movement of vulnerable persons, with investigations into the adults involved ongoing.
