- She said she and her children were targeted in two separate attacks linked to her investigations.
- Masuku also revealed that investigators received threats and were placed under home protection for more than a year.
A senior investigator at the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Nomsa Masuku, has told the Madlanga Commission that her work investigating rogue police officers left her son paralysed.
Masuku testified that she and her children were shot at on two separate occasions because of her investigations into police corruption.
A visibly emotional Masuku said that during the first incident, her son, who was driving her at the time, was shot, leaving him wheelchair bound.
In a second incident, her vehicle was riddled with bullets while she was driving with her children on the N17.
Masuku is the lead investigator in the murder of Emmanuel Mbense, who was allegedly tortured and killed by Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers and South African Police Service (SAPS) members in 2022.
Suspended EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi allegedly ordered a cover-up of Mbense’s murder. This was revealed by slain Witness D, Marius van der Merwe, during testimony at the commission last year.
In the same testimony, Van der Merwe implicated Wiandre Pretorius, who died by suicide last weekend.
Masuku told the commission that she believes more suspects were involved in Mbense’s murder. She said after obtaining warning statements from suspects, it became clear that more individuals were present at the scene on the night, including members of the public.
She added that she and other investigators received threats, which resulted in them being placed under home protection for 16 months.
