Internet users demand Simphiwe Dana’s apology to Nomzamo Mbatha

Simphiwe Dana’s hairstyle controversy with Nomzamo Mbatha doesn’t seem to be dying down.

The drama started earlier this week when Simphiwe accused Nomzamo of copying her signature Afrocentric hairstyles without giving her credit.

She took to social media to express her frustration, stating, “Honey, there’s a difference between appreciation and appropriation. You’re not the only one. I’m fed up. It’s deeply disconcerting and cringe”. In the now deleted post, she also called out the Shaka iLembe production team for allegedly lifting her hairstyle ideas without acknowledgment.

The dispute highlights the complexities of cultural ownership and creative contributions in the entertainment industry. Simphiwe’s accusations sparked a heated debate among fans, with some supporting her stance on protecting creative originality and others arguing that Afrocentric hairstyles are a shared cultural heritage.

Some social media users are now urging the songstress to move on from the drama, with many requesting her to apologise to Nomzamo.

However, Simphiwe’s recent post featuring the same hairstyle has reignited the controversy, leaving many wondering if she’ll let the matter go. Nomzamo has yet to respond publicly to Simphiwe’s accusations.

One user said, “You are tarnishing your legacy. Get off your high horse. Nobody owes you anything. You also were inspired by the same history they were inspired by. Bold of you to assume they copied you when you yourself did not birth the style. Even Mama Miriam Makeba used to rock such elaborate hairstyles, susqhela Sim-phiwe!”

“It’s not too late to humble yourself and apologise to Nomzamo sisi. A lovely Wednesday to you, too, by the way,” said another.

Another one added: “Apologise to Nomzamo and Shaka iLembe, cause people brought evidence that you did not create the hairstyle.”
