Inside Black Coffee’s traditional, white wedding

Black Coffee may claim he was not in a customary marriage – entered via a traditional wedding – to Enhle Mbali Mlothswa, but records and images of the star-studded event suggest otherwise.

There’s also a look at his 2017 white wedding, which was organised by celebrity planner Sophie Ndaba.

INSIDE BLACK COFFEE WEDDINGS

In 2011, Black Coffee – real name Nkosinathi Maphumulo – and Enhle Mbali’s traditional Zulu wedding made headlines in the entertainment industry.

Lifestyle publication ZAR Online covered the event, a digital platform linked to the ZAR Empire, spearheaded by politician and businessman Kenny Kunene.

According to the platform, the wedding, which had a gold, black, and white colour scheme –  took place at Enhle’s family home in Soweto.

It read: “Mbali, who wore traditional Isizulu maiden wear, looked as radiant as ever, and she was complemented by the ever-stylish Black Coffee as he stepped out in a traditionally modernized cream suit”.

The event was attended by Black Coffee’s peers, including DJ Christos, DJ Fresh, and  Euphonik.

Six years later, the couple would enjoy a white wedding.

Fast forward to 2017, Black Coffee and Enhle Mbali held their white wedding in Sun City.

The event was organised by celebrity wedding planner Sophie Ndaba.

Enhle wore a custom Gert-Johan Coetzee wedding dress, while Black Coffee donned a black-and-white tuxedo.

The couple changed outfits later during the ceremony, as seen in wedding guest Julius Malema’s Instagram post.

WHAT IS A CUSTOMARY MARRIAGE?

According to a government handbook, a customary marriage is defined by a marriage concluded under customary law, which upholds the “customs and usages traditionally observed among the indigenous African peoples of South”

As South Africa recognises customary marriages through the 1999 Customary Marriage Act, traditional unions – whether Zulu, Xhosa, or any other – are legally valid civil marriages, which are, by default, in the community of property.

Under the act, the conclusion of lobola between a bride and groom’s families constitutes the beginning of a customary marriage.
