The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Member of Parliament (MP) Luyolo Mphithi has clarified what happened in the video clip that sparked debate on social media platforms.

The video shows the newly appointed DA leader, Geordin Hill-Lewis, embracing fellow members of the party. This is after they announced that he will be taking the baton from John Steenhuisen. In the video, some internet users noticed that Geordin shook hands and hugged two men before skipping Luyolo, who was also clapping and smiling in celebration of Geordin’s new appointment.

Luyolo took to his X (formerly Twitter) page to give clarity. He said in his post: “As the guy in this video – I want to clear something up. I was standing far back and not in close proximity to Geordin. He did not skip me I was not in close range for him to shake my hand. There is no crisis here. Let’s move on.”

As the guy in this video – I want to clear something up. I was standing far back and not in close proximity to Geordin. He did not skip me I was not in close range for him to shake my hand. There is no crisis here. This is unfair. Please can it be corrected. https://t.co/kEKpl50c3f

One user directly replied to Luyolo’s post and said: “Sir you were standing next to those two gentlemen yet you claim you were far back yet he reached out for those two. Lol, accept that you are nothing to those you praise and worship.”

Kim, you’re seeing wrong – Luyolo is very clearly standing in the back and not within reach. He was one of the MCs on stage, and moved to the back to allow the winners to stand in the front row. And if this video went on longer, you would have seen he hugs Siviwe next https://t.co/qezBXnRG7S

He’ll be in the townships with cameras tomorrow hugging and kissing every black person he sees. https://t.co/MCgaFNeD2Q
