SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt admits the impressive displays of Grant Margeman is down to him now having the freedom to roam further forward.
Margeman, 25, has long been tipped as a future star of South African football but has not had a straightforward journey since leaving Ajax Cape Town (Cape Town Spurs) in 2020.
He joined Mamelodi Sundowns where he featured three times for the club before two separate loans with Moroka Swallows and SuperSport.
At both clubs, he featured regularly and returned back to the form that earned him a move to Sundowns and Matsatsansa secured him permanently with the deal that took Thapelo Maseko to Chloorkop in the off-season.
And in the opening games of the 2023/24 season, there’s been a real change in his style of play showcased with the lung-bursting run into the area that created Etiosa Ighodaro’s goal in the 1-0 win over Cape Town City.
“Ya [it’s an instruction from me], he’s got that in his make-up but he doesn’t do it enough, I think he’s got so much speed over 10, 15 meters he can play combinations,” Hunt said about the in-form midfielder.
“And when you play… we don’t play with defensive midfield players and attacking midfield players, I don’t believe in that – so we need to understand the moments of the game.
“And he’s good in those moments, he can give us more, but the games he’s played here, he’s been good for us – long may it continue but yes, it’s an instruction from me.”
SuperSport are now unbeaten this season with a draw and two wins in three games in the DStv Premiership as they sit second behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns with Margeman and Siphisihle Ndlovu central to their positive start.
Ndlovu has also signed permanently to the club after his loan from Orlando Pirates and it’s something that Hunt feels is a good step for their ambitions.
“He’s been good in pre-season, he’s been excellent, obviously we have another two loan players but the rest are ours now for a change, so we only have two, not five or six so now we can try and build [the squad],” Hunt said about signing Margeman from Sundowns.
“But I mean you know what happens with our club, we build every year, if we could all the ones we had last year and the year before… we’d have a very good team but it doesn’t work like that, so we build every year.”

Margeman will be aiming to maintain his form having been on the periphery of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad selections in recent months.
