Hunt On Wild Celebrations After Beating Zwane’s Chiefs Side

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has explained his wild celebrations after beating Kaizer Chiefs and ending their hopes of CAF inter-club football for the 2023/24 season.

SuperSport beat Chiefs 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday which meant they secured an unbeaten home record with 10 wins and five draws from 15 games this season.

And it was achieved at three different venues with the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium not fit for Premier Soccer League standards and the TUT Stadium deemed too small to host a game of the magnitude of Amakhosi.

But Hunt, who was sacked by Chiefs back in May 2021 with the club then in the last four of the CAF Champions League was notably elated by the result with Giamphani Lungu netting the only goal of the game.

“I think you all know how I left, it wasn’t nice, semi-finals of the Champions League you know but I can’t… it’s part [of the game]. It’s gone, any victory in the Premier League is a good victory,” Hunt said, stating the ‘cup-final’ scenario brought out emotions.

“But for us in our situation, trying to fight for second, and them fighting for second it was pretty much like a cup final I thought, I didn’t want to make it like that, but I knew if they beat us, they one point behind us, if we beat them it’s over.

“And with a good crowd, home [away from home]. We’re unbeaten this year at home, with three home venues unbeaten, has it been done before?

“Unbeaten at home, okay we lost to Dondol… one game but I mean, come on I lost to Dondol so we could come second in the league. You know the story. We had no players, we had to play [Gabuza] as a defender but yeah, any victory is good, especially in our situation.”
