Hunt on whether SuperSport can challenge for league title

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has explained why he thinks his side won’t challenge for the league title this season despite being tipped as one of the teams to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Matsatsantsa’s ex-coach, Kaitano Tembo, believes SuperSport have all the resources to fight for the league. The Tshwane side has been one of the active sides in the transfer market, bolstering their squad.

In total, they have brought in seven players, namely, Phathutshedzo Nange, Washington Arubi, Abdurazak Hamza, Etiosa Ighodaro, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Siyanda Xulu and Risen Albert.

To add, they have promoted four academy players to the senior team; Shandre Campbell, Ime Okon, Jabu Matsio and Samukelo Xulu.

Despite all these additions, Hunt believes they are nowhere near challenging Sundowns because they don’t have a big squad.

“I always think for the league title, you have to build up to that in terms of the squad. The squad is the most important thing in football,” said Hunt.

“You are only as good as your team on the bench. When you look at your bench, you have people who can go in and do even better than people on the pitch.

“I don’t think we are at that point yet, we are very thin, but we getting better.”

GAVIN HUNT ON THE YOUNGSTERS IN THE TEAM

The mentor is happy that many youngsters have been promoted to the senior team. However, the setback they face is losing them after they show to be quality players.

An example is Thapelo Maseko, who recently joined Sundowns following a great spell last season.

“There are young players, six or seven of them that I got now, very good. They are the future, but how long can we keep them? Asked Hunt.

“We had one last year. He was a sensation for us, he’s gone. That’s the nature of the business, we in that sector.”
