Hunt – Give Us Five Or Six Sundowns Players Back

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has jokingly suggested they could challenge for the league title if they got their players back from Mamelodi Sundowns.

With two games remaining in the league, SuperSport are in third place, two points behind second-placed Orlando Pirates and 21 behind the champions Sundowns.

And up next they face Kaizer Chiefs, who are in fourth and trail Hunt’s side by four points in the race for CAF inter-club football next season.

But when asked what Matsatsansa need to do in order to get back to challenging for the league, Hunt stated maybe getting five or six players they sold to their Tshwane rivals.

“Well just give us the five or six players back to us from Sundowns and we’ll show you,” Hunt said.

“Then we’ll show you where we can go… it’s unfortunate but we have to find new ones, that’s my game, we’ll find new ones, get younger ones in, try and get a team that’s competitive, try and close the gap – you know.

“They have set the bar so high now, I don’t think anyone is going to catch them in the next few years, that’s for sure, but we need to get closer, make it more competitive, which we will do – we make the games competitive.”

Hunt went on to state that, to be realistic, they need to build a squad that can consistently pick up points against the other teams, and it’s not always about beating the league champions in order to fight for the DStv Premiership.

“But it’s not about against them, it’s about being competitive against everybody and that’s where the difference in the league. It’s all and well you play the league champions and make it competitive but when we play the two and three bottom teams this year, we took three or four points off them – there’s your problem.

“We need to be winning those games, the league is very competitive and it will get competitive because I don’t think there’s enough players out there, that we can be equal. It will be an ongoing grind but we’ll try our best to get closer if we can.”

SuperSport face Amakhosi this weekend at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday at 15h00 before ending their season next week in Polokwane against Sekhukhune United.
