SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says he wants his side to make the DStv Premiership more competitive as he plays down their recent impressive run of form.
After a winless start in their opening four games, SuperSport have shot up the table with six wins from their last seven games as they sit fourth in the table with the chance to sit second behind league leaders and champions Mamelodi Sundowns before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break.
But ahead of their clash against Swallows at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium this afternoon, he posed the question of whether the squad is good enough or has the mentality to remain consistent for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
“The hardest thing is to get to the top and then the second hardest thing is to stay there, you know you look at all teams all around the world… to maintain a level of consistency, we have to get better, can we get better? I don’t know,” Hunt said.
“You have to get a bit lucky in a time period where players in the right age and what you want, that type of thing – so we have to make the league more competitive.
“How do you do that? I don’t know… We have to improve our coaching, get players in, we have to try to improve the league every year.”
Matsatsansa’s run of form has sparked interest in the squad and has already drawn talks whether Hunt can lead the club into the glories of the best, when he won three consecutive league titles between 2007 and 2010, three of his four in the league’s history.
“That’s a problem, we have to manage expectations, if you were in the changing room after our last game, last weekend, what I said to the players, you will understand what it’s all about and we need to just be… we won a few games, that’s it,” Hunt explained.
“Let’s win 30 games, let’s be good over 30 games, that’s all I said, we can’t get ahead of ourselves, we are still nowhere near the teams we had here before in terms of everything, quality, mentality and I think we’re a long way from that.
“But we can build that in, you know what I’m saying… winning games does help but we can’t let this, we have games ahead of us. We haven’t reached where we can get to, you can control performances but you can’t control results.”
