Having a busy social life doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune. Whether you’re catching up with friends, planning a date or looking for something fun to do over the weekend, there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself without putting pressure on your wallet.

Choose experiences over expensive nights out

Instead of automatically meeting friends at a pricey restaurant or cocktail bar, look for affordable experiences.

There are plenty of parks, beaches, markets, galleries and outdoor spaces that are either free or inexpensive. Try organising a picnic, sunset walk, beach day or games afternoon. Everyone can bring something, making the outing more affordable for the group.

Make eating out more affordable

According to RCS Group, it is important to dine smarter. You don’t have to give up restaurants completely. Instead, look for lunch specials, early-bird deals and casual eateries, and decide how much you can comfortably spend before you go.

Another smart option is to eat at home before heading out for drinks or entertainment. You can also suggest a bring-and-share dinner with friends. It’s social, relaxed and usually much cheaper than a restaurant meal.

Find free entertainment

Keep an eye out for free live music, community events, markets, exhibitions and public performances in your area.

For example, some markets or other public spots may have free entertainment experiences which you can enjoy without having to hurt your pocket.

Set a social budget

Finally, Frugal and Thriving recommends giving yourself a realistic monthly social budget. Once you know what you can spend, divide it between activities rather than relying on impulse decisions.

A smaller budget doesn’t have to mean a smaller social life. With a little creativity and planning, you can spend less, discover new places and still make memorable moments with the people you love.
