How Chiefs’ bad start cost its players a place in Bafana squad |

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says Kaizer Chiefs bad start to 2022/23 DStv Premiership is the reason many of its players were overlooked in the national team.

Sekgota is the only Chiefs player that made it to the 23-man squad that will face Sierra Leone and Botswana in friendlies in the next coming days.

The trio of Bruce Bvuma, Yusuf Maart and Keegan Dolly missed out.

Bvuma has been lacking some game time after veteran goalkeeper Itumelebg Khune returned to the starting eleven, whilst Maart and Dolly have been playing.

BROOS ON CHIEFS AND ITS PLAYERS

“I’m sad about it, I know [Itumeleng] Khune is a very good goalkeeper. I played against South Africa with Cameroon, Khune was in goal,” Broos told the media.

“I’m a little bit sad they don’t give more chances to Bruce [Bvuma]. Bruce is a young keeper, he has potential and he has qualities.

“Suddenly, after the four nil against Sundowns they put him out of the team. It was not his fault that they lost 4-0. There were other players who made very big mistakes, then you are there as a goalkeeper.

“It was a little bit unfair, but ok the coach decided now there is Khune again. You can’t say he’s playing bad, but it is very pity for Bruce.

“I think Yusuf [Maart] has been a victim of bad start of Chiefs, same with [Keagan] Dolly. Chiefs didn’t start well the season.

“When I see Yusuf playing, he’s not the Yusuf of Sekhukhune. I think it’s the pressure, results are not there.

“Keagan didn’t start very well at Chiefs, was even on the bench in recent matches. Keagan Dolly on the bench, he’s not in the level of Keagan Dolly. It’s a pity for him.”

Chiefs’ bumpy start see them lay ninth on the log table heading into the international break. The Soweto giants have 11 points from eight matches.
