Home Venue For Bafana-Morocco Qualifier Revealed?

Despite SAFA Cape Town expressing an interest in hosting Bafana Bafana’s last qualifying group match for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) against Morocco, iDiski Times has learnt it will once again be at FNB Stadium.

South African Football Association (SAFA) Cape Town President, and national vice-president, Bennet Bailey confirmed to this publication that they have put in a bid to host the fixture, which is set for 17 June.

But despite SAFA CT expressing their interest to host the Group K encounter at DHL Stadium before the 25 April deadline, iDiski Times has learned the Gauteng-based venue was the preferred choice for the SAFA.

This publication has since also gathered that there was no bidding process done for this game.

South Africa and Morocco have already qualified for the continental showpiece in Ivory Coast next year, with the Atlas Lions currently topping the group with six points from two matches, while Bafana have four points from three matches.

However, they already secured their place over bottom-placed Liberia after beating them in the head-to-head record, following their 2-1 win in Monrovia – with Zimbabwe disqualified from qualification.

The FA believes the match deserves a bigger venue as it comes the weekend after the CAF Champions League final, where Mamelodi Sundowns could possibly be hosting the second leg, should they beat Wydad Athletic Club in the semi-finals over two legs.

This story first appeared in the iDiski Times newspaper, edition 102, which is freely available to read on our website.
