  • A Germiston couple finally married after their August wedding was disrupted by a fire at the local Home Affairs office.
  • Disgruntled residents protesting evictions had torched the building, ruining their special day.
  • Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber congratulated them at their rescheduled ceremony, praising their resilience and love.

A young couple from Germiston, east of Johannesburg, has finally tied the knot weeks after their wedding was disrupted when the local Home Affairs office was set ablaze.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber congratulated the newlyweds, Nthabiseng and Promise Nozibele, who were originally scheduled to wed at the Germiston Home Affairs offices on 12 August, a date that also marked Nthabiseng’s birthday.

Their plans were derailed when disgruntled residents, protesting evictions, set the building on fire and ruined their special day.

The couple had already celebrated a customary wedding in November last year but had booked the civil ceremony in June, selecting the August date for its sentimental significance.

Minister Schreiber commended their resilience.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great honour to present to you for the very first time: Mr. and Mrs. Nozibele!” he said.

“We refused to let injustice stand in the way of love. #TeamHomeAffairs intervened to ensure the couple was married today, and we also presented them with a bouquet of roses to celebrate their love and commitment.”

Schreiber thanked the couple for inspiring South Africans, noting that their story shows that love triumphs over all obstacles.

“Congratulations to the beautiful newlyweds and thank you for reminding us to ensure that love always triumphs over evil!”.
