KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli is upset that his province is well-known for having many hitmen who cause trouble all over South Africa.

Speaking at a provincial cabinet meeting in Mayville, Durban, Ntuli said he moved the community safety department to his office to fight hitmen and other crimes.

“It’s embarrassing that KZN is known for hitmen. That’s why we added community safety to the premier’s office. If we don’t stop small crimes, we can’t deal with big ones. We need to take strong action,” said Ntuli.

The Moerane Commission in 2018 found that KZN had many hitmen involved in political killings. The KwaMashu and Glebeland hostels are known for harbouring dangerous guns-for-hire.

Ntuli asked his cabinet colleagues to work together and put aside their political differences to help the people of KZN.

He said their unity is important because people depend on them to improve their lives.

He said President Cyril Ramaphosa’s focus on the National Development Plan is “our plan for developing communities and improving the economy. We must be driven by the desire to help our people. There’s no time to waste.

“Our people have high hopes for us, and we must not let them down. Let’s work together to make this province a peaceful and prosperous place,” said Ntuli.

The cabinet meeting will end on Wednesday.
