In the vibrant world of South African music, a thrilling announcement has set the stage for an unforgettable event. The South African Music Awards (Samas), a prestigious celebration of local talent, has unveiled its list of nominees for its 29th edition. The spotlight is on slain rapper AKA and K.O, who have taken the lead with an impressive seven and six nominations respectively.

The announcement was made at an exclusive yet intimate gathering at the Jabulani Theatre in Soweto. Despite the modest attendance, the air was charged with anticipation for the grand event scheduled for the weekend of 17 and 18 November at the Durban ICC. The ceremony promises to be a spectacle, broadcast live on SABC 1 for all to witness.

After an eight-year hiatus, the awards are making a triumphant return to KwaZulu-Natal. This homecoming is part of a three-year partnership with the province’s Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs. MEC Siboniso Duma expressed his excitement about hosting music lovers and tourists who will flock to the province for this musical extravaganza.

The Recording Industry of South Africa’s (RiSA) Refilwe Ramogase shared that they have been working tirelessly since the last Samas to create a show that they can be proud of. He praised the dedicated industry representatives who have been fine-tuning the rules, perfecting the judging criteria, and selecting panel members tasked with choosing nominees from a vast pool of talent.

Despite last year’s event being overshadowed by poor attendance and criticism for alleged planning and execution flaws, this year promises a fresh start. Following these issues, RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi announced that the Sama project management team was suspended and an internal disciplinary process was instituted. This year’s Samas are set to rise from these ashes, promising an event that celebrates music and talent in all its glory.
