Rand Water says it is worried about high water consumption in Gauteng, particularly in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
The utility’s spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo, says residents are consuming water above normal levels, putting a significant strain on the overall water supply network.
“Current demand is forcing the system to operate under pressure, stretching infrastructure capacity to accommodate abnormally high usage levels. Furthermore, this high consumption has negatively affected parts of our bulk water supply area,” said Maroo.
The concern follows a major water outage in some parts of Johannesburg and Tshwane, which left residents running up and down looking for water.
Rand Water says it is now forced to reduce water supply to areas consuming above-normal levels in order to stabilise the entire bulk water supply system.
Residents have been urged to use water sparingly and implement water-saving measures to help reduce demand.
