The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has escalated its crackdown on the catastrophic corruption at Tembisa Hospital, with a high-profile raid on Hangwani Maumela’s luxury residential property in the affluent Sandhurst suburb of Sandton.
The raid targeted a mansion linked to a businessman, named in the SIU’s interim report, who is allegedly implicated in the looting scandal that has seen over R2 billion siphoned from the East Rand hospital through fraudulent procurement.
According to the investigation, the massive financial haemorrhage was orchestrated by three major syndicates.
One of these groups, the Maumela Syndicate, is reportedly tied to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, whose assets, including luxury homes and high-end vehicles, are now under scrutiny.
The SIU’s findings indicate that funds earmarked for essential healthcare services were systematically diverted via thousands of irregular purchase orders, often for which no goods were ever delivered.
