Orlando Pirates last won the league title in 2012 in dramatic fashion.

The Buccaneers defeated Lamontville Golden Arrows 4-2 on the final day to complete a historic treble-winning campaign.

Since then, Pirates have endured a long wait for another league crown despite coming close on several occasions.

The Soweto giants also experienced a trophy drought between 2014 and 2020, but they have since re-established themselves as South Africa’s “Cup Kings”, winning eight trophies in the last six years and potentially adding a ninth before the end of the current campaign.

Orlando Pirates on the verge of winning league

Now, the Buccaneers stand on the brink of ending their 14-year league drought. Should Pirates defeat Durban City this weekend, they will be crowned Betway Premiership champions after an intense title race with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Victory in either of their final two matches would be enough to secure the title.

Just two weeks ago, it seemed as if Masandawana would run with the league but draws against Stellenbosch, Richards Bay and Kaizer Chiefs got the Sea Robbers back into the hunt.

Defeat away to TS Galaxy has now given Orlando Pirates a perfect opportunity to clinch the league following a dramtic week of local football.

The Sea Robbers last won the title in 2012 after a dramatic 4-2 win over Golden Arrows. Two goals from Benni McCarthy secured the win which ultimately would be the club’s last to date.

Here is how Orlando Pirates lined up the last time they lifted the league trophy in 2012:

Goalkeeper: Moeneeb Josephs

Defenders: Lucky Lekgwathi (captain), Rooi Mahamutsa, Siyabonga Sangweni, Tebogo Matlaba

Midfielders: Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali, Tlou Segolela, Daine Klate

Forwards: Thulasizwe Mbuyane, Benni McCarthy
