Thanduxolo Mathumbu, a 24-year-old from Bizana in the Eastern Cape, needs help to achieve his dream of studying engineering overseas.

He has a scholarship to study in Romania but needs a plane ticket to get there.

He shared his story with Scrolla.Africa, saying he was one of the top students last year at Baleni Senior Secondary School.

“Being chosen to study abroad is rare, and I don’t want to miss this chance. That’s why I’m asking for help with the plane ticket,” Thanduxolo said.

“The ticket costs more than R15,000, which is a lot, but I believe I can get there.”

He is set to leave South Africa on 2 September.

Even though Thanduxolo grew up in a rural area and came from a poor family, he never stopped dreaming of achieving success.

“Going to Romania isn’t just a good thing for me. It also shows South African kids that they should never give up. I’m doing this not just for myself. It will inspire kids still in school to work hard because hard work can take you places you never imagined,” Thanduxolo said.

“My uncle raised me, and I know that going abroad will make him proud.”

Thanduxolo hopes to study in Romania for four years.

Luyolo Nqabisa, a Bizana resident, believes people like Thanduxolo should get more help from the government.

“I hope he gets the support he needs. But our government should also provide funds for students who get scholarships in other countries, especially when the host country is paying for most things,” said Luyolo.
