Helen Zille set for Showmax Roast

Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille is used to being in the hot seat when it comes to politics. But this time, “Gogo Zille” will suffer scathing burns in Showmax’s next Roast, set to take place next month,

The 74-year-old follows in the footsteps of celebs like Minnie Dlamini, Khanyi Mbau, Pearl Thusi, Steve Hofmeyr, and the late AKA, who have all been roasted by a panel of shady fellow stars.

HELEN ZILLE  TO STAR IN SHOWMAX ROAST

This week, Helen Zille announced that she would star in the next Showmax Roast, which will be filmed during the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival, which will take place from 2 to 4 May at the Sandton Convention Centre.

In a social media post, the former DA leader – now the chairperson of the Federal Council – starred in a hilarious skit about the upcoming event. In it, “GodZille”  took on the role of a firefighter en route to put out scorching flames.

The ad poked fun at Helen’s quick fingers on the X app and sharp tongue that is able to “fight fire with fire.”

“I say it like it is, and I get roasted on social media and in the press all the time. So why not put it on the main stage? If people are going to laugh, I’d rather join them, showing Africa that I can dish it out as much as I take it. All under the umbrella of fun and banter,” Helen Zille said of her new comedy gig.

According to Showmax – who have yet to announce a premiere date – the Roast will feature plenty of “punchlines, wild comebacks, unfiltered truths, and more than a few jaw-dropping moments.”

It added: “Nothing is off the table.”

Showmax added that a panel of fellow celebrities would be announced soon.

FROM ONE HOT SEAT TO ANOTHER

Last year, Helen Zille took the hot seat in another Showmax production: talk show, Die Tollie & Manila Show. Like the hosts, all guests must undergo a drag makeover.

Featuring on episode three, Helen was quizzed on topics like her social media clapbacks, political enemies, and her opinion on the Government of National Unity (GNU).

When asked about her drag transformation, Helen told Showmax: “Scary. It was terrifying to see myself like that!”

“I think you should always try something once,” she added.
