While many politicians choose luxury rides, former Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille has been praised for her decision to drive a second-hand car, a Toyota Yaris.

The 74-year-old was the previous owner of a Corsa, which she had had for over 25 years.

HELEN ZILLE PRAISED FOR DRIVING YARIS

On the X platform, one South African praised Helen Zille after spotting her in her modest car.

X user @zekewareley posted: “Passed @helenzille on the N2 in traffic yesterday afternoon. Still driving herself in a humble Toyota Yaris. No lavish lifestyle, no entourage. A reminder of true leadership through humility.”

While some agreed, others claimed that Zille’s decision to drive a second-hand car could be attributed to financial reasons

On her own X account, Helen Zille revealed that she had chosen to drive a Yaris over its affordability.

MODEST CAR COLLECTION

Apart from a Yaris, Helen Zille was the proud owner of a Opel Corsa for over 25 years.

Helen and her family also own a 2025 bright yellow Bajaj Qute, which is known for being an economical and petrol-efficient option.

Her first car was a VW Beetle.

Congratulations Mrs. Helen Zille (Maree) with taking delivery of your all New Yaris 1.5 Xs CVT. Welcome to the Toyota…
