Al Ahly head coach Marcel Koller lavished praise on Percy Tau following his decent display against Ghazl El-Mahalla, while revealing the two things the South African attacker got right for the Cairo giants.
Tau was on target in his first start under Al Ahly’s new coach Koller as they beat El-Mahalla 2-0 in an Egyptian Premier League game on Wednesday at the El-Mahalla Stadium.
It was Tau’s first goal in Ahly colours since scoring a brace against ES Sétif in a CAF Champions League semi-final clash on May 7.
In addition, the strike is Tau’s first in 12 months in the league, as he had last found the back of the net against Smouha in November of 2021.
MARCEL KOLLER ON PERCY TAU
Koller was impressed with Tau’s performance on the night as the former Brighton & Hove Albion star put in a good shift before being substituted in the 75th minute of the El-Mahalla game.
The Swiss coach, Koller, explained that Tau got his movements and application of pressure high up the field right.
“The player [Tau] was injured, so it was necessary for him to get a chance for me to see him,” Koller told the media.
“I knew that Tau could play as a striker, and he played very well, but he wasn’t 100% fit yet due to him returning from an injury.
MOVEMENT AND PRESSING
“Tau’s movement in the first half was excellent, and his high pressure on the defenders was great. I was impressed with his performance.
“Everything I asked of the players in the first half was 100% implemented. We also tried to control the match during the second half and succeeded in completely dominating the game,” added Koller.
Tau recently recovered from a serious thigh injury, which kept him out of action for some time.
The 28-year-old has featured in league games for Al Ahly this season, coming on as a late substitute in his first three games of the new season before earning a start.
