Another military training facility has been raided and several firearms and ammunition seized. This time the suspected training camp was discovered in Modimolle, Limpopo.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo confirmed the raid and the subsequent arrest.
She said the Polokwane-based Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, in collaboration with the Public Order Police (POP), Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Modimolle Vispol, raided the alleged training facility.
Mbambo said that during the operation, the team seized licensed rifles, pistols, and ammunition believed to have been used during training.
“The purpose of the training is not yet clear, but military-related training cannot be ruled out,” she said.
Mbambo stated that the raid followed a tip-off from the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation about the suspicious training camp at one of the farms in Modimolle.
“A sting operation in collaboration with different specialised units was conducted. How firearms and ammunition ended up at the farm is still under investigation. No one was arrested,” said Mbambo.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo Province, Major General Gopz Govender, praised the team for their excellent work. General Govender emphasised that the police must work towards preventing anything that threatens the safety and security of the country.
