A taxi driver escaped arrest after being handcuffed by police when other taxi drivers rushed to his aid.

In a video on social media, traffic officers are seen trying to arrest the taxi driver on FW De Klerk Boulevard in Cape Town.

The driver fights back as they try to pin him down. A group of taxi drivers arrive and help pull the driver away.

Later, the driver is seen driving off with handcuffs still on one wrist.

JP Smith, MMC for Safety and Security, said the officers tried to arrest the driver for allegedly using a vehicle with a fake licence disc.

“Passing taxis stopped, and drivers then attacked the officers, allowing the suspect to get free and run away,” Smith said.

“The city’s safety and security investigation unit is looking into the incident and will follow up to find and arrest the driver.

“Our officers face these challenges daily while doing their duty to protect residents. This is why the city is changing the law to allow for better enforcement in public transport,” he said.
