Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo made history by winning two gold medals at the Paris Olympics in artistic gymnastics, the first Filipino man to win a double gold at the Olympics.
Yulo has been showered with many different gifts from businesses across his country, as well as the unique gift of a lifetime supply of mac and cheese.
Yulo will receive three million Philippine pesos (R950,000) and a congressional medal.
Private companies have also given Yulo gifts, including a fully furnished two-bedroom unit worth P24-million in Taguig City, Metro Manila.
Other unique gifts include free wedding photography services, a lifetime supply of phone cases, free medical consultations after Yulo turns 45, and a P10-million brand ambassadorship contract for a beauty clinic.
“The Philippines have witnessed history,” said President Marcos.
Yulo is only the second Filipino athlete to win an Olympic gold, after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz in 2020.
His double gold medal win makes him the first Filipino to win two gold medals at a single Olympics.
Yulo’s emotional reaction to his win, where he collapsed in tears, showed how important this achievement is.
“We are a really small country,” he said.
“Being able to get a gold medal for us is big for us. Huge! I dedicate this to the Filipino people who supported me.”
Cafes and restaurants are offering free meals or milkshakes to anyone named Carlos, Caloy (his nickname), or Edriel (his middle name). A music venue is offering free entry to anyone whose name begins with C.
