Police in the Western Cape are investigating a shooting at a barbershop in Brown’s Farm, Philippi, Cape Town, at around 1pm on Wednesday, where three men were killed and five others were injured.

A resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was visiting a family member when she heard the gunshots.

“I’ve only ever heard so many gunshots in movies,” she said.

She ran back to her house to hide.

When the shooting stopped, she went to see what had happened. She heard that the attackers came to the barbershop and told some customers to leave before shooting the victims. Two men were killed on the spot.

The victims were between 18 and 21 years old.

“I feel sorry for the families, but the ones who were shot were not innocent. I heard this was revenge for something they did,” she added.

Another resident said gangs in the area are fighting over protection fees.

“They are killing each other over money they didn’t earn,” the resident said.

“At least the attackers let innocent people leave the barbershop. I don’t feel sorry for those paying for their bad deeds.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut confirmed that detectives are searching for four suspects involved in the attack.

“Four armed men approached the barbershop and shot eight people. Two died at the scene, and six others were taken to hospital, where one more died from his injuries,” Traut said.

Police believe the shooting may have been an act of revenge, but they are still investigating.
