A 67-year-old woman who was a member of a street committee in Site B, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, was shot dead on Saturday morning.

A resident, who asked to stay anonymous, said: “We lost someone who was strong and spoke up for us.

“Last week, we had a meeting after a young woman was killed. The elderly woman who was murdered spoke up a lot in that meeting. We think that might be why she was killed,” the resident said.

“She lived alone,” the resident said. “We were shocked to find her body on Saturday morning.

“Some people heard gunshots and saw two men walking away. They weren’t even running, which shows they aren’t afraid of anyone,” the resident said.

She added that everyone in Site B was still in shock.

“It will be hard for us to attend meetings now or even speak up about crime. It’s clear we are living with criminals who don’t want anything to change,” she said.

A family member, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said they first saw the news on Facebook of an elderly woman who had been shot dead but didn’t know it was their relative.

“I saw the story on a Facebook page, but there was no name, so I didn’t think it was her until I got a call telling me she had been shot.”

“We are very sad and confused. We don’t understand why she was murdered. In the meeting, she was just doing her job as part of the street committee,” the family member said.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the Khayelitsha police had opened a murder case.

“Police went to the crime scene and found the woman lying on her kitchen floor with a gunshot wound to her head. Medical staff declared her dead at the scene,” said Twigg.

The reason for the attack is still being investigated, and no suspects have been arrested yet.
