Two men suspected of terriorising the community in Alexandra were arrested by officers from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit.
The suspects allegedly invaded the residential containers at the site where EFF councillor Moshe Mphahlele was shot and killed over a week ago.
The duo is facing criminal charges of possession of a dangerous weapon, pointing a firearm, evading and resisting arrest, failing to obey a lawful police instruction, reckless and negligent driving, inconsiderate driving, and intimidation in Alexandra.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed the arrest.
Fihla said officers received a complaint regarding a group of individuals driving a white Toyota HiAce who were reportedly threatening the community at the container houses in Alexandra, located at 4th and 8th Street.
“Officers were dispatched to the location and upon arrival they observed the vehicle leaving the premises.
“The community pointed out the vehicle belonging to the suspects. As the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to comply and attempted to ram the officers.
“A high-speed chase ensued, during which the suspects pointed a firearm at the officers from the passenger door,” said Fihla.
Fihla said that in an attempt to stop the vehicle heading more deeply into Alexandra, the officers fired at the suspects’ vehicle. “Eventually, the officers managed to shoot out the vehicle’s tyres, bringing it to a standstill.
“The suspects attempted to escape on foot, but the officers acted swiftly and apprehended them. A search of the vehicle revealed a black firearm,” said Fihla.
He said the duo was arrested and detained at Alexandra SAPS on various charges. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was seized and booked at the SAPS Aeroton vehicle pound.
“It was further discovered that these suspects had been terrorising the Alexandra community with firearms daily,” said Fihla.
Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety, Mgcini Tshwaku, applauded the quick action of the officers. “I would like to convey my appreciation for the swift measures implemented by the JMPD TRU to pursue and arrest the suspects effectively.
“Our law enforcement agencies are committed to upholding law and order in our communities, especially in Alexandra, where the situation may still be precarious following the community protest that led to the unfortunate passing of Johannesburg councillor Moshe Mphahlele,” said Tshwaku.
Tshwaku said no stone will be left unturned to ensure that all those responsible for Mphahlele’s death are brought to book. “Residents are urged to stay alert and inform the authorities of any suspicious activities.”
