Thamsanqa Nkevu – a resident of Kwanobuhle in Kariega, Eastern Cape, who wakes up early every morning to protect school children as they cross a dangerous bridge – has been nominated for a national award.

Known as the guardian angel of the Kwanobuhle bridge, Thamsanqa has been nominated for the South African Heroes Awards, which will take place on 21 September in Pretoria.

He is nominated in the youth empowerment category for his commitment to helping his community.

For the past four years Thamsanqa, a pastor and martial arts expert, has been ensuring that women and children get to school and work safely.

Despite being recognised, Thamsanqa said that when he decided to fight against crime in Kwanobuhle, he never thought about receiving an award.

“I’m surprised. I didn’t expect people to notice what I did or think I deserved an award. It was a shock to me, but I’m humbled by the recognition,” he said.

Besides fighting crime, Thamsanqa is the person everyone in his community turns to for help.

He is called to settle domestic disputes, talk to students with behavioural problems, and even assist when the electricity goes out.

“People call me for all kinds of help. For me, that’s the greatest honour,” Thamsanqa added.

During recent floods, he saved someone swept away by strong currents. He also found the bodies of two female students who had drowned.

Thamsanqa is further known for buying school uniforms and matric blazers for needy children.

“I don’t want a child’s school memories filled with pain and hardship. I try my best to make sure no child is left behind,” he said.

“I’m ready for whatever comes, even if it means I’ll lose my life helping my community. I will keep standing up against crime in my community.”
