Green Eagles suspend Chiyangi and ex-Chiefs striker Kilambe

Green Eagles have suspended coach Aggrey Chiyangi following a poor start to the new campaign in Zambia’s topflight league.

His assistant and ex-Kaizer Chiefs striker Rotson Kilambe has also been sidelined.

Chiyangi, who was currently the longest-serving FAZ Super League boss has been in charge of Eagles since 2017.

He led the club to their first-ever league runners-up finish during the transitional 2019 season.

Chiyangi is also the first coach sidelined after six games played into the 2022/2023 FAZ Super League campaign.

EAGLES STATEMENT

“Green Eagles FC head coach Aggrey Chiyangi and second assistant Rotson Kilambe have been sent on 30 days administrative leave with immediate effect,” Green Eagles said in a statement.

Eagles finished 4th in 2018, 5th in the 2020/21 campaign and 3rd in the 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 seasons. 

The highlight of Chiyangi’s six-year reign saw him famously eliminate Orlando Pirates from the preliminary round of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League.

Eagles beat Pirates 1-0 at home in Lusaka and drew 1-1 away in South Africa to advance to the second phase where Primeiro de Agosto of Angola knocked them out of the competition.

Chiyangi also had a spell as Chipolopolo Zambia caretaker coach between 2018 and 2019 and guided.

He guided Zambia to victory in the 2019 COSAFA Cup title when Chipolopolo beat Botswana 1-0 in the final played in Durban.

Chiyangi’s departure comes just three days after Eagles lost 2-0 away to 11th positioned Kansanshi Dynamos to see them collect just 1 point from their last three games.

Eagles are currently just above the bottom-four relegation zone at number 14 on 7 points after six matches played and are just one point behind Kansanshi.

Meanwhile, Eagles have placed assistant coach Alex Namazaba in interim charge and his first game will be at home on September 9 against Kabwe Warriors.
