A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his 91-year-old grandfather in Mlungisi township, Komani, over the weekend.
The family said the trouble started when the grandson asked his grandfather, Mlawuli Tata, a traditional healer, for money to buy bread.
Mlawuli gave him some money, but when the grandson asked for more, he refused.
To avoid an argument, Mlawuli swallowed the money.
The grandson allegedly stabbed his grandfather in the throat and opened his stomach, trying to get the money back.
Mlawuli’s son-in-law, Siya Malman, said he went to Mlawuli’s house on Wednesday, 28 August, but no one answered.
“I could hear the radio playing, and I tried calling him, but his phone went to voicemail. I didn’t worry too much because he often goes out with his clients, as he is a traditional healer,” Malman said.
The family broke down the door when they still couldn’t reach him the next day. Inside, they found Mlawuli sitting in a chair covered with a blanket.
Police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni confirmed that Mlawuli’s body was found with a stab wound in his throat.
The police arrested the grandson and charged him with murder.
He is expected to appear in the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 5 September.
Mlawuli will be buried in Mhlotsheni village, KwaBhaca, on Saturday, 7 September.
