  • The injured learner was taken to a medical facility but later succumbed to his injuries.
  • The Gauteng Department of Education says police are investigating while psychosocial support has been arranged for pupils and staff.

A tragic incident has left a 16-year-old boy dead in Carletonville after he was allegedly stabbed by another pupil on school premises on Thursday, 12 March 2026.

The teenager was a Grade 9 pupil at Badirile Secondary School in Khutsong. He lost his life following a violent altercation with a Grade 10 learner on the school grounds.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the 17-year-old allegedly stabbed the Grade 9 pupil, causing severe injuries.

“The injured learner was rushed to a local medical facility but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Accordingly, the school is in the process of conducting the necessary disciplinary action against the perpetrator, while police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” said Mabona.

The department has dispatched its Psychosocial Support Unit to visit the school to provide support to affected pupils and educators.

The department has also called on parents and guardians to assist in instilling discipline in children at home, stressing that it requires a collaborative effort to ensure pupils behave appropriately and remain safe.
