  • A 20-year-old Grade 10 pupil was arrested after allegedly stabbing the learner during a physical confrontation.
  • Police have condemned the incident, with the suspect expected to appear in court soon.

A physical confrontation that turned tragic at a school in Mpumalanga has left one family grieving and the school community reeling in shock.

This follows the alleged murder of an 18-year-old Grade 11 learner by a 20-year-old pupil who is in Grade 10.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 20-year-old pupil became involved in a physical altercation with the victim, during which he allegedly stabbed the 18-year-old to death.

Police say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident but was later arrested.

“Emergency medical personnel were summoned to the scene and, upon arrival, certified the 18-year-old learner deceased,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Jabu Ndubane.

The 20-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has strongly condemned the incident, particularly as it occurred on school premises.
