South African influencer and content creator Grace Mondlana is back in the spotlight—and this time, it’s not for getting her hair done, but for taking it out.

Just weeks after going viral for spending a staggering 28 hours in a chair to install ultra-thin braids reportedly costing R3,500, Grace has revealed that she has officially removed the now-famous hairstyle—sparking a fresh wave of reactions across social media.

The original braiding session had captivated Mzansi, with many social media users both impressed and shocked by the sheer time, patience and cost involved. Videos documenting the lengthy process quickly made the rounds online, turning Grace into a trending topic overnight.

For some, the look was worth every cent. For others, the price tag and marathon session raised eyebrows, igniting debates about beauty standards, maintenance and the realities behind influencer glam.

Now, in a surprising twist, Grace has shared that the braids are already gone—just weeks after the intense installation process.

As expected, the internet had plenty to say. Many users questioned why someone would endure such a long and expensive process only to remove the style so soon.

Others, however, came to her defense, pointing out that protective hairstyles—especially intricate braids—can be uncomfortable over time and are not always meant to last for months.

Some fans even applauded her transparency, noting that influencers rarely show the after side of high-maintenance beauty looks.

One TikTok user said: “I’m convinced she didn’t like the hairstyle.”

While another one said: “I actually understand her, this is a better protective style for hair growth, the braids were too small for long term and probably felt heavy.”

Grace’s viral moment has once again highlighted the conversation around the true cost of beauty and influencer aesthetics. While social media often showcases the final polished look, it doesn’t always reflect the time, discomfort and financial investment behind it.

@grace._mondlana 28 hours later, braiding gracey is baaack!😍😭❤️ I last cut my hair on the 1st of February 2026 & I sweared that I’d braid by the end of April, shinny or cloudy lmfao.😂 xxxsmall braids aren’t for the faint hearted damn! 🎀: @zandile_bill #gracemondlana #braids #braidstyles #blackgirlhairstyles #shorthair ♬ original sound – Grace Mondlana 🎀
