President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a special official funeral for former minister Pravin Gordhan, who passed away early on Friday, 13 September, at the age of 75 after a long illness.
The funeral will take place on Thursday and will include a ceremony led by SAPS, followed by a private cremation.
The Presidency shared this news on Monday.
Gordhan’s family has requested that, instead of sending flowers, people donate to charities or the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.
Gordhan held many important roles in government, serving as minister of finance from 2009 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017.
He also served as minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs (2014–2015) and minister of public enterprises from 2018 until his retirement in March 2024.
He was appointed commissioner of the South African Revenue Service in 1999 after serving as deputy commissioner.
In that role, he transformed the institution into a key, effective, and highly respected arm of government, making SARS what a spokesperson called a “pillar of strength for the nation’s fiscal health.”
