South African referee Victor Gomes will officiate the reigning World Champions France in their opening clash against Australia on Tuesday.
The eighth game at the Al Janoub Stadium of the 2022 FIFA World Cup represents the first match of what’s likely to be the final tournament for the iconic official.
Gomes looks set to hang up his whistle after the global showpiece which marks the pinnacle of any referee’s career.
The World Football Governing Body confirmed that the South African and his trusted assistant referee Zakhele Siwela will take charge of the Group D game at 21h00.
