South Africa’s well-known sangoma Gogo Maweni, born Makgotso Lee-Anne Makopo, is making headlines again—this time for a ritual that has tongues wagging online.

In a recent Instagram post, Maweni invited those who identify as “slay queens” or enjoy casual hook-ups to take part in her unique cleansing ritual, titled exactly that: “Slay Queens and Hook-Ups Cleansing Ritual.”

“Let’s face it, at some point it needs to happen 🤍,” she captioned the post, sparking both laughter and curiosity among her followers.

Social Media Reacts

The ritual’s name quickly caught the public’s imagination. One follower, @anele_siswana, wrote:

“It’s the title for me, my dearest 😂😍. You understand this space very well.”

Other reactions were equally enthusiastic:

Maweni herself engaged with fans, replying:

“Mos def … We know life 😍🙏🏾 and people need to face reality.”

Interest has crossed borders, with inquiries pouring in, including from Zimbabwe:

“I am in Zimbabwe. Can my Zim ancestors connect with u to assist me as well?”

What the Ritual Includes

For a R10 000 fee, participants can expect a full traditional cleansing experience, which includes:

  • Full body steam and ukuphalaza (purging)

  • River cleansing

  • Animal sacrifice to remove bad omens, dark spirits, or summon a spiritual husband

  • Spiritual body cuts glazed with traditional herbs

  • Ancestral summoning

  • Home cleansing kit and other ritual essentials

Maweni’s approach blends deep-rooted African spiritual traditions with a modern twist, targeting contemporary lifestyles and online culture—hence the focus on slay queens and hook-ups.

Personal and Legal Context

Maweni, a recent mother of twins, continues to navigate personal and legal challenges. In 2019, she was charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). The case is still ongoing at the Protea Magistrate’s Court, adding another layer to the fascination and controversy surrounding her public persona.

A Cultural Phenomenon

Gogo Maweni’s ritual is more than a headline-grabbing social media stunt—it reflects how traditional sangomas in South Africa are adapting their practices for modern audiences, blending ritual, spiritual guidance, and pop culture savvy. The viral response online shows that South Africans are intrigued, entertained, and sometimes inspired by how ancient practices meet contemporary lifestyles.

Whether you see it as spiritual empowerment or just pure entertainment, one thing is clear: Gogo Maweni knows how to make a cleansing ritual impossible to ignore.
