Richards Bay remain top of the GladAfrica Championship, while TS Sporting’s relegation was confirmed after the penultimate round of fixtures played on Sunday across the country.
All eight matches in the South African second-tier kicked off at the same time, and while the champions weren’t confirmed as of yet, it is now just between Richards Bay and AmaTuks who can lift the trophy, and gain automatic promotion. Cape Town All Stars also confirmed their playoff spot, by guaranteeing a top three spot.
Richards Bay held on to the top spot after a good away win against 15th-placed TS Sporting, winning 2-1 at the Kabokweni Stadium.
That result also means TS Sporting’s relegation was confirmed, and they will be joining Jomo Cosmos in the ABC Motsepe Leagues.
Cape Town Spurs held second-placed AmaTuks to a 2-2 draw at Athlone Stadium, meaning that the Tshwane team are now two points behind Richards Bay. The draw also meant Spurs are safe from relegation.
Hungry Lions and Cape Town All Stars ended goalless, but the point was enough to secure Allan Freese’s team their playoff spot. While they cannot win the league, All Stars also cannot finish lower than third.
Tshakhuma made sure of their safety with a 1-0 win over Uthongathi, while JDR Stars last chance of reaching the playoffs were scuppered when they lost 1-0 to Pretoria Callies.
Bottom-placed Jomo Cosmos picked up a 1-0 win against Platinum City Rovers, while Free State Stars beat Polokwane City 2-1.
Black Leopards and Venda Football Academy drew 1-1
